At the National Rehabilitation Hospital, our system of delivering rehabilitation treatment and care is organised around Rehabilitation Programmes and Teams.

Rehabilitation Programmes at NRH are led by Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine. Our Programmes are designed to meet the individual needs of adult and paediatric patients.  NRH Rehabilitation Programmes include the following:-

Rehabilitaton Programmes at NRH are delivered by Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Teams. Each Rehabilitation Team is made up of a range of specialists from Clinical and Therapy disciplines and services.  The Rehabilitation Teams work with each patient to develop rehabilitation goals and then work towards achieving the agreed set of goals during the admission period at the NRH.   Rehabilitation Teams may include the following healthcare professionals:-

Advanced Nurse Practitioners in the Spinal Injury Programme at the National Rehabilitation have noted an expediential increase in calls from patients, families and healthcare professionals regarding accessing spinal cord injury/dysfunction (SCI/D) specific care in acute and long-stay hospitals. Neurogenic bowel dysfunction after Spinal Cord Injury can be difficult to manage for patients, their families and care providers. Effective neurogenic bowel care can improve the quality of life for people with SCI by reducing discomfort and preventing complications.

Paula Keane, Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) at the NRH and educator on Neurogenic Bowel Care nationally, was awarded the MASCIP Paul Kennedy Bursary to assist in the development of a patient focused neurogenic bowel video.

Clinical expertise was provided by Dr Éimear Smith, Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine (specialist in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine and Rehabilitation), Mater Misericordiae and National Rehabilitation University Hospitals, Dublin.

The NRH Foundation also part-funded the project, which is greatly appreciated.
