Description of Service

The National Rehabilitation Hospital is committed to providing effective and integrated care in an environment that is safe for our patients, staff and visitors. The Risk Management Department oversees the risk management programme that aims to reduce risks in the organisation. It ensures systems and processes are in place to identify and to manage these risks to an acceptable level.

Risk is inherent in everything that any hospital does, treating patients, determining service priorities, managing a project, purchasing new equipment, taking decisions on future strategies or even deciding not to take any action at all.

The effective management of risks at all levels will therefore be a critical factor in the success of the NRH. The advent of clinical governance and healthcare standards has been a powerful influence for the introduction of systematic processes and systems to monitor care and provide assurance as to the quality of care in patients we see. Risk Management is one of those key processes. In addition to Patient Safety issues, listed below are just some of the key areas Risk Management are responsible for:

Incident Reporting
The NRH promotes a proactive health and safety culture by encouraging the reporting of all adverse or near miss events. All Incidents are recorded using the National Incident Report Forms (NIRF) and are recorded onto the NIMS database (National Incident Management System). All reported incidents (clinical and non-clinical) are managed in line with the NRH Incident Management Policy. This allows us to implement systems and structures to address high risk areas as a priority and continually monitor risk factors within the organisation.

Hygiene, Infection Prevention and Control
The Hygiene Infection Prevention and Control Committee and Team are the driving forces behind improvements in hygiene services within the NRH. Together both groups devise action plans, and make, implement and evaluate recommendations for improvement. Hygiene and infection prevention and control continues to be one of the most important performance indicators for the hospital and is closely monitored by the Board of Management and Hospital Executive.

Fire Safety
Risk Management works closely with the Technical Services Department to maintain an NRH Fire Register.

Quality, Safety and Risk
The Quality Safety and Risk Committee continues to monitor outcomes data and quality improvement initiatives in line with the programmatic and business practices structure of the hospital.

All staff levels within the NRH are kept informed regarding developments in the domain of risk management in the organisation. The department prepares monthly quality and risk reports for the Board of Management, Quality, Safety and Risk Committee and the Hospital Executive Management Committee.
