New Hospital Development – Announcement by Minister Varadkar Confirms Funding

Minister Leo Varadkar has announced the funding required to complete the 120 bed facility at the National Rehabilitation Hospital.

The National Rehabilitation Hospital is the first major healthcare project to be granted planning approval through the Strategic Infrastructural Development Process. The approval granted by An Bord Pleanála earlier this year is for Phase One of a significant capital development on the campus of the existing hospital at Rochestown Avenue. This development, which is a partnership between the HSE and the NRH Foundation, will see the existing ward accommodation at the NRH replaced by a new 120 bed facility including integrated therapy services. The facility will be purpose built, specifically to accommodate the needs of those requiring complex specialist rehabilitation services and will comply with best international practice and SARI guidelines.
The remaining funding required to complete this phase of the New Hospital Development Project was announced by Minister Varadkar in the Press Release issued by the Department of Health below:
Minister Varadkar confirmed yesterday (Tuesday 11th August) that a further €15 million has been allocated for the redevelopment of the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Rochestown Avenue, Dun Laoghaire. This allocation will now enable the Hospital and the HSE to proceed with a new 120 bed building on the Dun Laoghaire campus.
The National Rehabilitation Hospital provides complex specialist rehabilitation services to patients across the country.
Welcoming this additional allocation Minister Varadkar said, ‘the NRH is an important health facility providing a significant service. The additional funds allocated will allow for a large redevelopment of the hospital.’
Those patients attending the NRH often require complex specialist rehabilitation, with this in mind the new 120 bed facility will be purpose built to accommodate the needs of these patients. The facility will include integrated therapy spaces, hydrotherapy and sports facilities on the NRH Campus.
Minister Varadkar and Minister Lynch have visited the hospital with local representatives Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD & Eamon Gilmore TD recently to meet the staff and see the great work taking place there.
The Hospital recently secured planning permission from An Bord Pleanála for the new development. This increased exchequer allocation in addition to the NRH’s contribution will enable the HSE and the hospital to now proceed with the work and build the new 120 bed facility.
